Simple to Complex Sentence


 Dear Readers! this discussion of changing from simple to complex sentence will be very helpful. It can seem to you that this kind of changing sentences is very hard & difficult. Actually if you can follow the following rules, it will seem to be very easy & interesting to you. 



 How to Easily Identify Simple & Complex Sentences:

Simple to Complex Sentence

 (a) One verb is present in Simple Sentence. 
Here there is no sentence connectors or conjunction. 
 (b)But  in the complex sentence the number of verb will be two & the following sentence connectors will be used: since, as, because, so that, so............ that, though, although, relative pronoun-who, which, that,  when, what etc.   
(c) In the complex sentence there must be two clauses- independent & dependent.


# Changing Simple to Complex Sentences  in Several Ways.




 01. Simple Sentence( with Present Participle) to Complex 


i) Subject +

ii) Relative Pronoun ( who, which, that)+
iii) Helping Verb ( according to tense)+
iv)Present participle
 v) the rest of the sentence
N.B. Relative Pronoun- 'which'/'that' is for direct object denoting a thing and 'who'/ that is for indirect object)

Example:Simple: The boy playing in the field reads in class seven

Complex: The boy who is playing in the field reads in class seven. 
Simple: You saw the boy going there 
Complex: You saw the boy who was going there.


02.Simple( Past Participle) to Complex 


i) subject +

ii)relative pronoun+
iii) helping verb ( according to tense)
iv) past participle +
 the rest of the sentence
Example: Simple: The machine made in Japan is running well.  
            Complex: The machine which is made in Japan is running well.


03.Simple( Noun + Adjective) to Complex 

i) Article ( a, an, the) 
ii) Noun
iii) Relative Pronoun ( who, which, that)
iii) verb (according to tense)
iv) the before part of the noun
v) the rest part.
Example: Simple: An industrious man can shine in life.      
           Complex: The man who is industrious can shine in life.      
          Simple: A bad man suffers in life.       
         Complex: The man who is bad suffers in life.


04. Simple (Too..............to) to complex 


i)subject+

ii) verb+
iii) so ( instead of 'too')
iv) adjective ( adjective set between too.... .. to)
v) that + sub + can't / could/ mayn't/ mightn't ( instead of 'to')+
v) Verb + the rest part
Example: simple: He is too weak to move.    
           Complex: He is so weak that he can't move       
      Simple: I am too tired to walk fast     
       Complex: I am so tired that I can't walk fast.


05. Simple( to + verb) to complex


i) the before part of 'to + verb'

ii) so that ( instead of 'to')
iii) subject
iv)can/ could/ may might + verb 
v) the rest part
Example:      
      Simple: He works hard to prosper in life.    
        Complex: He works hard so that he can prosper in life.


06. Simple ( in-spite of/ Despite) to Complex


i) Though/ Although(instead of ‘in-spite of/ despite’)

ii)Subject

iii) verb
iv) adjective/ noun
v) comma
vi) other part of the sentence

Example: Simple: Inspite of his being health, he is lazy.     

          Complex: Though He is healthy, he is lazy.       
       Simple: Inspite of his studying hard, he fails in the exam.      
          Complex: Though he studies hard, he fails in the exam



07. Simple(Because of) to Complex)


i)since

ii) subject
iii) verb ( according to tense)
iv) adjective/ noun
v) comma(,)
vi) other clause
Example: Simple: Because of his illness, he can't go to school         
     Complex: Since/ As he is ill, he can't go to school     
         Simple:   Because of their playing cricket well, they won the match.              Complex: Since they played cricket well, they won the match.

08. Simple( Preposition: in, at, on) to Complex:

i) when it is / was( instead of preposition)
ii) the rest of the sentence
Example:
 Simple: In spring the cuckoo sings well         
       Complex: When it is, the cuckoo sings well.        
       Simple: On Sunday they enjoy holiday.      
      &nbsp My title page contents  Complex: When it is sunday, they enjoy holiday.




09. Simple(subject+object+to be...) to complex:



i)subject + verb

ii)that

iii)object to subject(him= he, me= I, her= she etc.)

iv)helping verb (according to tense)

v)adjective


Example: 

Simple: They know him to be honest.

Complex: They know that he is honest. 

Simple: You know him to be a cheat

Complex: You know that he is a cheat.
